Personal blogger and marketer Jenn Lisak recently posted about how entrepreneurs inspire her. Her message is that making mistakes is part of the process.
On her post, Lisak wrote:
Of course, there are always risks with starting your own business: losing money, neglecting your personal life, etc. But I believe that it is better to have tried and failed a startup than to never have tried at all. Why? One reason:
I want to create my own rules.
The desire to “reinvent the game” is the basis of many successful companies. Steve Jobs of Apple computer fame is often quoted as saying he co-founded Apple because he wanted to “put a dent in the universe.” He’s not alone. Many technology companies are active in markets that not only didn’t exist a few years ago, but in ones that they actually created!
It’s not just cutting-edge organizations that make their own rules. The rise of cupcake companies, as documented in places like The New York Times, proves that people are willing to try ideas that seem completely foolish. Who would have thought you could sell gourmet cupcakes in neighborhoods across the country?
Failure is the secret to success. You’ve got to make mistakes if you want incredible opportunities. That may start by admitting what you don’t know. Or as Jenn Lisak says when she goes to startup networking events:
By default, I always indicate that I am an entrepreneur, regardless of the fact that I have not started my own fully-functioning business. Despite this fact, I do believe that I will be an entrepreneur one day – I just haven’t decided what I want to do yet!
Good luck, Jenn!
