Tom Schuman Screwed Up

July 24th, 2011 - by Robby Slaughter

Tom Schuman is the Vice-President of Communications for the Indiana Chamber of Commerce. He recently admitted to making a mistake.

In a blog post, Schuman owns up to his error:

I absolutely hate making mistakes. Most people do, but when you’re in the communication business the errors are out there for all to read … or see … or in this case hear.
…

Anyway, [a company called] E-gineering earned the No. 1 ranking on the small/medium list at the recent Best Places to Work in Indiana awards celebration. But while I’m interviewing Nick Taylor, one of the company owners, on an Inside INdiana Business TV segment, I refer to the company as E-Engineering (you know, with the extra “e”).

It’s clear that Schuman feels absolutely terrible about botching this name. But as embarrassed as he is about the error, he’s clearly extremely impressed with the culture at E-gineering. The article in BizVoice Magazine (PDF link) explains why it’s such a great place to work. Part of that appears to be accepting employees for who they are and understanding that risk and failure are part of the process.

Congratulations to Tom Schuman for admitting his mistake. And congrats to E-gineering for taking the #1 spot in Best Places to Work in Indiana!
