Getting Kicked Out of School Turned Into A Success

February 17th, 2014 - by Alyssa Shea

Being a student who was kicked out of school will usually have you marked as a failure. But Ahmed Al-Khabaz isn’t counted among them, even though he was expelled for hacking his own school’s system!

Al-Khabaz, only 20 years old, already received job offers from numerous companies that want his skills and clearly think the young hacker has promise. He was expelled for finding flaws in his school’s security system while working on a class project. The school reported that they had caught the young man rooting around in their private property more than once before they decided to expel him.

“Francois Paradis, the college’s director of information services, said Mr. Al-Khabaz was warned after being sighted twice in Dawson’s system before he reported the computer flaw. Mr. Paradis said Mr. Al-Khabaz was spotted again after being told about limitations on tests he could conduct after finding the flaw.”

But Al-Khabaz had quite a different story.

“I was just scanning the software because I was scared for our data,” he said.

The student said he also asked for permission to do the later scan when he was told he was not authorized to carry out the task. He said he had three meetings with college officials and explained what he was doing.”

Though the school administration deemed him a failure, he decided to use this as a platform to prove that even a failure can lead to success!
