Shark Tank’s Rejection Led to Huge Success

September 26th, 2015 - by Robby Slaughter

Jamie Siminoff went on a taping of the TV show Shark Tank. He thought his company was worth ten times what they offered, so he walked away with nothing. But it was that public rejection that led to a tremendous victory.

As explained in an article on Business Insider:

The episode featuring Siminoff ended up airing in November 2013. And as soon as the show aired, [their product] DoorBot took off like crazy.

“We think we got at least $5 million of additional sales through the airing of ‘Shark Tank,'” Siminoff said. “It just absolutely throttled our revenue, awareness in the market from every level. Everything just popped after that.”

“It was probably the most important thing that’s ever happened to the business,” he continued. “It’s almost like it gave us a free check.”

The video itself (direct link) shows his complete failure in front of the sharks, and is a good lesson in things not going as you expect:

The lesson? Failure is the secret to success. Sometimes you need to get rejected to have the world take notice. And if you read on, Siminoff earned the attention of billionaire Richard Branson. Not bad for a screwup!
