Scientific Discovery Requires Failure

May 16th, 2017 - by Alyssa Shea

Stuart Firestein, chairman of the Department of Biological Sciences at Columbia University, had a lot to say about how beneficial failing is to the scientific field. We couldn’t agree more!

The Daily Progress reported on the 2017 Virginia Festival of the Book where Firestein talked about the scientific method and how failure is the best way to measure success.

“Knowledge leads to better ignorance,” said Firestein. “That’s what scientists argue about: How good the ignorance is at the moment.”

He followed up with this comment that we here at The Failure Blog can truly agree with:

“There are things we don’t know we don’t know,” Firestein said. “How do we get to that? Through failure.”

It doesn’t matter what path you’ve chosen to follow in life, what matters is that you allow yourself to fail!
