Ioannis Yannas And His Accidental Discovery

September 8th, 2017 - by Alyssa Shea

It may surprise you to find out that many of our scientific and technological advances come about because of a mistake. Accidental creations is a great way to learn.

Ioannia Yannas knows all about accidentally creating something. Back in the 1970s, he stumbled upon a way to make human skin regenerate. After a meeting with Dr. John Burke, a surgeon at Shriners Burns Institute in Boston, Yannas and Burke decided to work together to create something to help burn victims. Their original goal was a bandage to close the wounds and allow them to heal. Instead, something amazing happened!

“What they discovered—“a big surprise, totally unexpected, and hard to believe,” Yannas says now—was that while scars weren’t forming as they hoped, test animals were actually growing new skin.”

What a shock that must have been! This accident lead to amazing success!
