SC Johnson Knowingly Made Saran Wrap Less Sticky

October 10th, 2017 - by Alyssa Shea

While most companies strive to make their product better, one company has knowingly hurt their sales by making their product worse! What could possibly cause them to make that decision?

SC Johnson is famous for their food-wrapping product, Saran Wrap, and they are well aware that it’s just awful now compared to how sticky it once was. The chairman and CEO, Fisk Johnson, had admitted that he’s very aware that his product isn’t selling very well anymore. Why has he consciously chosen this path?

It comes down to their desire to protect the environment. SC Johnson eliminated PVDC from their product, knowing that it would irreversibly change Saran Wrap and their sales. The new, PVDC free product came onto the market in 2004 and has failed since then. Yet to them, it isn’t a failure, it’s a success knowing they are protecting the public!
