Benji Was A Shelter Dog!

December 5th, 2017 - by Alyssa Shea

Most dogs you seen on the big screen are bred from the purest line of breeds. Yet one of the most famous pups to make it big was found in a shelter!

Higgins, though you may know him as Benji, was a good boy. He acted in some of the most well-known shows and movies during his 14-year career in show business between 1960 and 1974. It all started when animal trainer, Frank Inn, found him at the Burbank Animal Shelter when he was a puppy.

Inn trained all the animals on some pretty famous TV series such as the Beverly Hillbillies, Petticoat Junction, Green Acres, and The Waltons. Inn was the best in the business and worked with some of the most acclaimed, purebred animals. When it came to Higgins, Inn told reporters that he was the smartest dog he had ever worked with. Higgins even won a PATSY, which is the Oscars for animals! What most would consider a failure turned out to be a successful career for this working pup!
